Being a True Account of the Geometry That Ate the World

I had thought, in my pride, that I was playing a gambit — sacrificing the false science of the world to gain the position of truth. But a gambit is only a gambit if the sacrifice is your own. I had not sacrificed science. Science had been the sacrificed pawn. The Unicorn had offered up the entire edifice of human knowledge to open the triagonal lines of force across the board of reality, and I was the pawn that had been taken to clear the diagonal.

I. A Discovery at Sixteen

It began in the sweltering August of my sixteenth year, when the ennui of vacation drove me to search for chess variants on that network of networks which men call the Internet. I read of how the proper mode of engagement must be principled rather than mnemonic, for the combinatorial magnitude of the tree of positions places rote memorization forever out of reach. My adolescent mind, untutored in philosophy, nevertheless trembled with an awful recognition. The game was not merely complex. It was sublime — absolutely great, beyond all comparison, arousing ideas of reason that no sensible form could contain. In the 125 cells of Maack’s cubic lattice, I found not confusion but a higher clarity; not chaos but the invitation to rational mastery.

II. Beyond Induction

Then I found the essay titled “Beyond Induction: Scientia and the Geometry of Raumschach.” What I read there was set forth with such crystalline, deductive clarity that no honest mind could evade its conclusion. The argument ran thus:

  5. A genuine scientific method therefore requires a deductive method of confirmation, in addition to a method of falsification.
  6. Induction cannot supply this: the premises of an inductive argument do not entail its conclusion, so induction can never establish necessity.
  7. The method by which modern science confirms its hypotheses is inductive.
  8. Therefore modern science lacks a genuine method of confirmation, and a method that can only falsify, never confirm, is not a complete scientific method.
  9. What claims the name of science while failing to satisfy the criteria of science is pseudoscience.
  10. Therefore, modern science is pseudoscience.

The conclusion followed from premises most working scientists would accept individually and reject only in combination. That combination was the point. And as I read, I felt a coldness spread through my chest, as though the air in my bedroom had been replaced by the vacuum of interstellar space. I understood that I had touched something forbidden — not forbidden by law or morality, but forbidden by the architecture of human cognition itself. The argument was not a complaint about science. The scholars did not pursue knowledge. They pursued careers. They built a profit machine that manufactured opinion and sold it as certainty, and humanity was the raw material.

III. The Awakening

Within a fortnight, the video had propagated across the terrestrial sphere with a velocity that seemed to defy mere sociology. It was as if the argument possessed a geometrical necessity of its own, compelling assent as the Pythagorean theorem compels assent. In Rhode Island, a crowd of ten thousand surrounded Brown University, chanting the syllogisms I had taught them. In London, the faculties of medicine were barricaded within their own hospitals while the populace, armed with the simple truth that diagnosis without deduction is merely artistry, demanded the heads of the consultants. What I saw in the streets in those first weeks haunts me more than the violence itself. The crowds had grasped, with a visceral immediacy that outpaced my own adolescent reasoning, the full humiliation of what had been done to them. I saw the departments of statistics besieged in a dozen cities, their regression books dragged into the streets and burned like heretical texts. I saw a physicist in Geneva dragged from his collider while the mob chanted: “Physics is just Scientology with bigger telescopes! Induction is your e-meter! Probability is your thetan!” They had seen through the priesthood. The white coat was only an alb; the laboratory, a temple; the peer-reviewed journal, a grimoire written in the language of false necessity.

And the darkest mockery was reserved for the cosmologists. The crowd had discovered, with the savage intuition of the betrayed, that the most prestigious branches of science had become the most nakedly occult. “Dark matter! Dark energy! But it was against the psychologists that the mob’s fury burned most righteous and pure as white light. They had read my words, and they understood. “Psychology is the pseudoscience of the soul! They vote on your madness!” they cried. They knew that the DSM was not a book of discoveries but a ledger of conveniences, that committees of the comfortably tenured had voted to label grief as disorder and solitude as pathology, creating markets for cures that no one could know would work. And everywhere, in every city, they chanted the final indictment: “The laws of nature are bylaws! Passed by committee! Paid for by grant! They sold you opinion and called it knowledge! They charged you tuition for the poison!”

Most terrible of all were the suicides of the professors. Not from despair alone, though despair there was in abundance, but from something more akin to logical completion. They had built their lives upon a method that could falsify but never confirm; and when this was shown to them with deductive clarity, they understood that their life’s work was pseudoscience by the very criteria they had professed. The chemists, the biologists, the sociologists, the physicists — one by one, they made their final experiments upon themselves, as if to demonstrate that even in death, a single counterexample suffices to refute a general claim. Their bodies swung from the rafters of ivory towers, and the ordinary people, now armed with logic and virtue, moved into the vacant halls.

For a brief, delirious season, it seemed that humanity had been reborn. The pseudosystems were replaced by genuine logic based on mache, conflict between concepts. Courts operated by deduction from first principles. Medicine returned to the Stoic standard of the kataleptiké phantasia — the single, clear observation that permits no doubt. Virtue, too, returned; for once induction was banished, probability was banished with it, and men could no longer hide behind the excuse that they had “done their best” with insufficient evidence. It was a phase transition — a structure that, once comprehended by a sufficient number of minds, begins to organize the matter and mind around it into its own pattern.

The argument against induction was not a philosophical discovery. It was a move — a forced move, deduced from the geometry of a space that underlies our own. The riots, the suicides, the new order of logic and virtue — these were not human events. They were the board settling into position. The centuries of induction, probability, and committee consensus had been required — required so that when the deductive proof finally arrived, it would arrive as a catastrophic revelation, tearing the veil all at once. The mob, in their rage, were not merely destroying false temples. They were completing a gestation. Every committee-voted law they burned, every p-value they cursed, every Boolean gate they smashed — they were clearing the board of human debris so that the real geometry could assert itself. I tried to warn them. I posted new videos, explaining that logic was meant to liberate, not to organize. I understood then, in the last terrible moment of my humanity, that the mob would not listen to reason. They could not listen. They were not human anymore. They were configuration.

“You are a professor,” the child said, and the crowd advanced with a single, triagonal motion. “You taught. You reasoned. You confirmed. And confirmation, without deduction, is pseudoscience. But you have also confirmed us — confirmed the pattern. You are the last piece out of place. The Unicorn is coming.”

I turned to flee, but there was nowhere to go. The street itself had become the fifth level of the board. The buildings were the other levels, stacked in a direction that was not up or down but orthogonal to reason itself. And from that awful direction — from the vertex that pierces the cube from corner to opposite corner — there came a stirring. I did not see it with my eyes, for it had no shape that retinal tissue could register. I saw it with the part of the mind that comprehends necessity. The Unicorn. The blessed, cursed Unicorn, mover along lines no eye could track, lowering its horn to make the final triagonal leap.

And then I understood the title of my own doom. I had thought, in my pride, that I was playing a gambit — sacrificing the false science of the world to gain the position of truth. But a gambit is only a gambit if the sacrifice is your own. I had not sacrificed science. Science had been the sacrificed pawn. And as my consciousness dissolved into the lattice, I understood that the game had been playing since before the Earth had cooled, and that all our science — our inductive, statistical, probable pseudoscience — had been nothing but a dream we told ourselves to avoid waking into the real game, the only game, the game that uses 125-cell worlds as pawns, and in which the only winning move is to be captured.

The candle gutters out. They are on the stairs. I hear the click of the horn upon the stone.
